Sight is the most valued of the senses. Unfortunately, because there are so many everyday causes, and we are all living longer, loss of sight is a common occurrence, particularly amongst the elderly.

The Benefits of Natures Aid Lutein Eye Complex with Bilberry: Natures Aid's comprehensive formula contains all the nutrients needed to maintain and raise levels of glutathione, the eyes most important antioxidant. Other antioxidants improve night vision and help the eyes adapt to changes in light conditions, beneficial to both macular degeneration and cataract patients.

Natures Aid Lutein Eye Complex with Bilberry contains many complimentary nutrients that together ensure healthy blood flow to the eye, raise antioxidant levels and strengthen eye tissues.

Lutein, a brightly coloured antioxidant carotenoid, is found exclusively in the macular and lens tissues, bathing cells in protection from UV light. Those with the highest dietary levels are 50% less likely to develop cataracts and 57% less likely to develop macular degeneration. Unfortunately, levels decline with age and poor diet.

Bilberry, rich in substances called anthocyanosides, protects both the retina and lens tissue from oxidative damage, restores elasticity to blood vessels and also makes rhodopsin.

Beta Carotene, Alpha Carotene, Cryptoxanthin and Zeaxanthin are other carotenoids with various roles. These include making rhodopsin, a pigment essential for good night visions and helping the eye adapt to changes in light, plus it has antioxidant properties.

Vitamin C adds to the antioxidant status and it is known that deficiency is a risk factor.

Vitamin E also adds its antioxidant properties to the fatty tissues of the eye, such as the nerve endings. Low blood levels of vitamin E is also a risk factor for cataracts. Vitamins B2, B3 and B6 preserve existing levels of glutathione.

Zinc, a very common deficiency in both the elderly and those with poor diets, makes enzymes essential for healthy visual function. Zinc also helps remove heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium, found in the lens tissue of smokers.

Copper helps balance the copper-depleting effects of the zinc and aids new collagen formation, important in the integrity of blood vessels and lens tissue.

Selenium is used to make glutathione, the most important antioxidant to the eye. Glutathione levels diminish with age and selenium intake is generally poor in the UK.

Rutin is a member of the bioflavonoid family, and is especially well known for reducing the number and size of pores in blood vessels walls to reduce leaking of fluids.
